Martin McCurdy Architecture is an architectural practice based in Brighton. I provide architectural services to property owners who wish to extend, convert, upgrade or improve their homes.

About Martin

I have provided architectural services to more than 250 clients over the past 12 years. I have a degree in architecture, a masters in urban design and over 40 years’ experience in building, including property acquisitions and development, maintenance and repairs, and the conservation and restoration of traditional timber-framed buildings.

I am a member of the AECB, (the Association of Environmentally Conscious Building) and the Passivhaus Trust  and an Associate of the Green Building Partnership, a Brighton-based not-for-profit cooperative of eco-refurbishment specialists.

My ethos: individual design for individual clients

My ethos is to treat every client as an individual and their project as a one-off that deserves a personalised approach. I aim to respond efficiently and thoughtfully to each client’s design brief in order to match my design proposals to their circumstances and their personal style, whilst also giving them the option to make their building as sustainable and energy-efficient as possible.

The work I do

My work focuses on adapting and extending homes to accommodate the changing needs, aspirations and lifestyles of their owners. I will use my knowledge and experience to interpret your wishes, transforming your ideas into great design that maximises available space and reduces the energy consumption of your building whilst working within budget and meeting the necessary regulations.

How I work

Whatever you need, the first step is for us to meet at the property and discuss your project. I will try to answer all your questions and outline to you what I see as the major issues in completing your building project. There is no cost to you for this initial meeting and you are not committed to using my services.

Following our initial meeting, if you wish to use my services I will write to you setting out the terms of my appointment. We will agree a start date for the work and I will set out the timescale for the stages of the work.

I believe in simplicity and clarity, and have straightforward design processes, dependent upon the level of service you require. I will consult with and keep you informed at all times during the design and approval process.

Regardless of the size and nature of the project, I believe that your property should be considered in a holistic way. I will advise you on the steps to take to make your building project and your home as sustainable as possible. This could include adopting a green build philosophy, carrying out an outline energy assessment, or doing a detailed energy assessment of your property and how the works will impact on its thermal performance.

“We have worked with Martin for over three years. Our collaboration began in 2008 when we asked him to design an extension to our kitchen. The final plans involved extending the kitchen as well as moving the existing garage and utility room. Martin assisted us in choosing a builder and at every turn we found his help invaluable. The work has received plaudits from friends and professionals alike. He has always been most generous with his advice and the persons he recommended have all been excellent.” BL &PL, Withdean, Brighton
