Energy-efficient, sustainable buildings

My philosophy is to minimise the environmental impact of the buildings I design and to build the most energy-efficient, sustainable home possible for you.

Building regulations set the standard for insulation and the air tightness of your new home, your extension or conversion. However, I believe in designing to minimise the environmental impact of buildings by reducing the amount of energy that is needed to heat them as much as possible. I can help you reduce the carbon footprint of your home even further and help you to beat the ever-rising energy costs.

Outline energy assessment

As part of my services I can carry out an outline energy assessment of your property. This assessment will give you suggestions of how you could reduce your energy bills and make your home more comfortable. I will look at the whole property, particularly the elements that are directly affected by the proposed works. I can identify the energy-efficiency measures suitable for your property and include these as part of the works.

Detailed energy assessment

If you wish, I will carry out a detailed energy assessment of your property looking at all the components of your home, and assessing what changes would have the greatest impact on your energy use. Together we can come up with a low-energy strategy for your building project and for your home.

Passivhaus standards

Passivhaus is a defined low-energy building standard which sets optimum indoor comfort levels for the occupants whilst using very little energy to heat the property. This is achieved by a high standard of thermal insulation and air tightness and an excellent build quality combined with a mechanical ventilation system giving fresh clean air.

Passivhaus uses a detailed scientific methodology to assess the energy performance of a property at the first stages of the project and throughout the design process. I can use this methodology to model a Passivhaus or to assess the energy performance of the property you are refurbishing or retrofitting.

I am a member of the Passivhaus Trust.

Green refurbishments

If you want to reduce your fuel costs and improve the comfort level of your property, a green refurbishment or retro-fit may be the answer. A green refurbishment involves a holistic approach to the property using a combination of energy-efficient measures to reduce the energy use and the CO2 emissions from your property.

I can advise you on the different standards to reduce your energy usage and CO2 emissions. I will work with you from the earliest stages of the project to establish the standard you wish to achieve, and will then design to meet these standards and accommodate your budget by selecting suitable components and materials.

I am a member of the AECB, the Association of Environmental Conscious Building.
